Every room in the home, especially the living room, should be taken seriously for security measures. As a place to entertain, converse and relax, this room offers everything for this family of six. To ensure the excavation met our safety standards, we sent Emily Henderson, a fashion expert and mother of two, to teach a class on living room safety. From the fireplace to the walls, there’s room for improvement in every home. See how Emily improved the safety of these spaces without sacrificing style.
1. Fire safety
A baby and a pet in the house inspired Emily to design a stylish pet gate guard. The small but effective gate keeps the baby’s hands away from the fireplace. And thanks to its great looks, the baby guard gate fits in with the rest of the living room!
2. Smart wiring
Stylish decor and home security measures? Count us in! What looks like a stack of good books on the mantelpiece actually hides a clutter of cords and play equipment. The trick here is to remove the pages and covers and replace the now empty space with trays. With just a few tools, you can make your own secure storage unit sized to fit any width, height and length. Small hands can get loose cords, so it’s best to keep those out of reach and out of sight.
3. Stay alert
One of the best ways to keep your home safe is with an alarm system near the door to warn you of any intruders. The problem is that bulky wall-mounted alarm units are quite an eyesore. To solve this problem without interrupting the look of the room, Emily installed a gallery wall. Tucked behind a thick canvas frame is an alarm security device. Make sure your code is low enough for kids to reach, and set an easy-to-remember code so unwelcome guests can’t guess.
